Natalia Valdez Mrs. Lehmann English 2-1B 3 December 2019 “Friends Like These” Review
Bonnie Arbor once said “You are a piece of the puzzle of someone else’s life. You may never know where you fit, but others will fill the holes in their lives with pieces of you.” We are all put in each other's life for a purpose. We validate each other's opinions. Dorothy Rowe’s article “With Friends Like These...” is an informational read because the article is based upon personal experience. It informs about the psychology of friendship. Rowe’s background qualifies her to write about this topic. My opinion on the article “Friends Like These” was that it was a pretty good article for an everyday reader. It has some interesting things with the psychology of friends and how we validate other opinions to which we can relate to. Rowe has her degree in clinical psychology and has experience as a psychologist and a writer. The purpose of this article is informative. The writing style is informal, because it uses first person pronouns. Writing from personal experience makes the article more personal. Rowe’s sources would notqualify this article for use ina research paper because she didn’t cite her sources. Mostly, the article talks about her experiences, but outside research wasn’t conducted to support her claims. The structure of Rowe’s format was consistent. The section titles in this article were useful and straightforward. In the introduction, the main claim was stated early. In my opinion,Rowe’s hook was effective, she caught my interest right away because her article was about the psychology of friends. It drew me in because it was relevant. The organization in this article was pretty good. Section titles helped. The transitions help move the reader smoothly through her ideas. The content in the article was also strong. Rowe had the main claim in her introduction and conclusion. The main claim was evident in both. The introduction in Rowe’s article explained the topic right away and the conclusion finished with the author’s thoughts clearly. The author’s main claim is that friendship is based upon validation. This is psychology of friendship. Friends define who we are and validate our opinions. The main support in this article is the author’s personal and professional experience. The bibliography lacked outside research, but overall the information is good for basic, everyday reading. It is enough for in depth- research. In conclusion, the writing in this article was based on personal experience with the psychology of friendship. The formatting was helpful and organized with section titles. It was a straightforward claim. This article showed the value of friendships and how we validate other opinions.
Article Review Reflection
1. Explain the process you went through to write this paper. Please be specific. The process I went through while writing the article review was to wreathe article more than once. After that I had a thesis about the article. I had to see the strengths and weaknesses of the article for example the section titles we a strength because I showed main ideas.
2. What qualifies this paper as an informative essay? What are the requirements for a review and how did you meet them? This article had information the article " friends like these" which means it is factual. The requirements for a review are title, abstract, introduction, conclusion, weaknesses, strengths and references. I had a title for the article review. I gave a brief summary about the article to summarize main point. For the intro I added a hook and for the conclusion put main idea once more. Gave the strengths and weaknesses for example with section titles. One thing I did not get to or meet was the reference for the article. I didn't have a cited page which was needed.
3.What one piece of advice would you give someone writing a review for the first time? Why? One piece of advice I would give someone writing a review for the first time would be to not summarize the entire plot provide a general idea of what happens. Read, watch or listen to the work ore than once. Once you do that you would have a overall sense of the work. Then think about the strengths and weaknesses.
